Resveratrol in Red Wine May Prevent Immature Fat Cells From Maturing

How does drinking red wine manage to keep the cardiologist at bay? Two studies suggest different approdiscomforts as to how merlots and cabernet sauvignons and other categories of red wine offer heart-healthy benefits.

In the first of two studies published in the July issue of American Journal of hospitalal Nutrition, scientists at the University of Ulm, Germany, investigated the biological behaviors of resveratrol in human fat cell biology. Resveratrol is found in the skins of red grapes and has been shown to be a potent biological agent that may offer protection against cardiovascular disease, cancer, type 2 diabetes, and neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease.

Researchers hypothesized that resveratrol might decrease obesity by preventing immature fat cells from fully maturing, and as well help activate sirtuin 1 (Sirt 1), a protein that protects the heart from inflammation.

Laboratory tests conducted in vitro on human cells, in which cells were managed in a control surroundings, such as a petri dish, showed that resveratrol affectd fat cells’ form and function. Resveratrol blocked immature fat cells from developing and differentiating, which, in turn, affected the fat cells’ abilities to function. Several studies have used animals to examine resveratrol’s effects, but this is one of the first to use human fat cells.

They as well found that resveratrol stimulated glucose uptake into human fat cells and blocked molecules from converting into fat. Moreover, resveratrol affectd Sirt1 in a beneficial way and it as well affected the secretion of adipokines, fat cells that engage in cell-to-cell communication. The discoverings indicate that resveratrol might interfere with obesity and other metabolic effects that could increase the risk for cardiovascular disease.

Researchers suggest resveratrol could offer some therapeutic occasions in the treatment of obesity, which is quite prevalent in the industrialized world. Reducing obesity, a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, may as well help recover heart health. Consistent to the World Health Organization (WHO), there are 1.6 billion people age 15 and older who are overweight — meaning they have a body mass index (BMI) of 25 or higher — and in any case 400 million people who are obese, meaning their BMI is 30 or higher. The WHO projects that in five years there will be 2.3 billion overweight adults and more than 700 million obese adults.

“Our discoverings open up the new perspective that resveratrol-caused intracellular pathways could be a target for prevention or treatment of obesity-associated endocrine and metabolic adverse effects,” the authors write. “Resveratrol may act on different levels of cell signaling.”

Red Wine and Blood Vessel Cells

In the second study, researchers from the Israel Institute of Technology, Haifa found that red wine enhanced the health of the cells in blood vessels. The research team studied 15 healthy adults with a mean age of 29 years who agreed to consume 250 mL (8.5 ounces or two servings) of red wine everyday for three consecutive weeks. The participants provided blood samples at the beginning and end of the three-week study period so that researchers could evaluate blood vessel function.

The researchers write that “daily red wine consumption for 21 consecutive days significantly enhanced vascular endothelial function,” which means it recoverd the health of the cells lining the blood vessels, which then recovers blood flow and heart health. Drinking red wine every day as well helped reduce cell death or what is known as apoptosis.

“The prevalence of cardiovascular disease is low in populations that consume large amounts of red wine,” they write. “Moderate consumption of red wine provides cardiovascular protection, but the mechanisms that underlie this protection are unclear.”

The researchers suggest that red wine increases nitric oxide bioavailability and triggers a cellular communication process necessary for blood vessels to function. Endothelial cells lining the interior of the blood vessels rely on nitric oxide to signal to the vessel tissue to relax, which aids in blood flow. Red wine, the researchers report, facilitates cellular communication that then activates this process.

In an accompanying editorial to both studies, researchers from the National Institute on Aging in Bethesda, Md., suggest hospitalal trials are needed to measure the effect of red wine and to assess whether the compounds in red wine can reverse or attenuate established cardiovascular disease.

Resveratrol “acts both indirectly (through adipose tissue) and directly (through endothelial cells) to prevent cardiovascular disease,” they write. The two studies provide “new insights into the mechanisms underlying the potential benefits of resveratrol in metabolic disease.” However, they caution, questions remain about red wine’s biological properties and mechanisms.

The ‘French paradox’ rears its ugly head again. The reasoning goes something like this: French people eat more saturated animal fat than any other affluent nation, and have the second-lowest rate of coronary heart illness (only after Japan, which has a much higher stroke rate than France). French people drink red wine. Therefore, red wine must be protecting them against the artery-clogging yogurt, beef and butter. The latest researches to fall into this myth was published in the AJCN newly (1). Investigators showed that 1/3 bottle of red wine per day for 21 days increased blood flow in forearm vessels of healthy volunteers, which they interpreted as “enhanced vascular endothelial function”*. The novel discovering in this paper is that red wine consumption increases the migration of certain cells into blood vessels that are thought to maintain and repair the vessels. There were no control groups for comparison, neither abstainers nor a group drinking a different type of alcohol.

The investigators then went on to speculate that the various antioxidant polyphenols in red wine, such as the trendy molecule resveratrol, could be involved. Even though you have to give animals 500 bottles’ worth of resveratrol per day to see any effect. But there’s another little predicament with this hypothesis…

Ethanol- plain old alcohol. You could drink a 40 oz bottle of malt liquor every night and it would probably do the exact same thing.

No matter what the source, alcohol consumption is associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular illness out to about 3-4 drinks per day, after which the risk goes back up (2, 3)**. The association is not trivial– up to a 62% lower risk associated with alcohol use. Controlled trials have shown that alcohol, regardless of the source, increases HDL cholesterol and reduces the tendency to clot (4).

Should we all start downing three drinks a day? Not so fast. Even though alcohol does probably decrease heart attack risk, the effect on total mortality is equivocal. That’s because it increases the risk of cancers and accidents. Alcohol is a treatment, and my opinion is that like all treatments, overall it will not benefit the health of a person with an otherwise good food and lifestyle. That being said, it’s enjoyable, so I have no predicament with drinking it in moderation. Just don’t think you’re doing it for your health.

So does red wine decrease the risk of having a heart attack? Yes, just as effectively as malt liquor. It’s not the antioxidants and resveratrol, it’s the ethanol. The reason the French avoid heart attacks is not because of some fancy compound in their wine that protects them from a high saturated fat intake. It’s because they have preserved their food traditions to a greater degree than most industrialized nations.

I do think it’s interesting to speculate about why alcohol (probably) reduces heart attack risk. As far as I know, the mechanism is unknown. Could it be because it relaxes us? I’m going to ponder that over a glass of whiskey…

* It may well represent an recovermalet of endothelial function, but that’s an assumption on the part of the investigators. It belongs in the discussion section, if anywhere, and not in the results section.

** The first researches is actually interesting. For once, I see no evidence of “healthy user bias”. Rates of healthy behaviors were virtually identical across quintiles of alcohol intake. This gives me a much higher degree of confidence in the results.

Soy (or Glycine max ) is a plant in the pea family. It has been used in Asian diets for thousands of years.
Soybean are good source of protein, oil and minerals, but low in carbohydrates. It also contains water-and fat-soluble vitamins.

Soy isoflavones

Soybeans also contain isoflavones-compounds similar to the female hormone estrogen.

The major portion of soy protein is composed of glycinin and etaconglycinin.
The health benefits of soy are in isoflavones which are a class of plant estrogen found in a high concentration in soy. In particular genistein occurs in soy products such as tofu, soy protein isolates, soy flour and some estrogen dietary supplements.
The reason that genistein has come under medical scrutiny is the fact that it activates estrogen receptors in cells, including some types of breast tumor cells.

Benefits of soy

Soy saponins are divided into three groups according to their respective type of aglycon, soyasapogenol A, B and E.

Saponin A and AB group fraction protects the liver against antioxidation and improved lipid metabolism in the injured liver.
Administration of a small peptide derived from soybean showed antifatigue, antiobesity and hypoglycaemic activity in mice.

Feeding soy protein to hamsters, consistently, resulted in significantly reduced incidence of gallstones.
Soy products (tofu, soybeans, miso, and soy protein powder) can help lower cholesterol and triglycerides. Substituting as little as 20 g per day of soy protein for animal protein can significantly lower cholesterol.

In studies of experimental carcinogenesis in animals, soybean isoflavones exhibited protective effect in 65% animals.

FACTS ABOUT SOY BENEFITS:

Soy products (tofu, soybeans, miso, and soy protein powder) can help lower cholesterol and triglycerides.

Soy foods can help lower blood pressure.

Italian researchers found a significant decrease in the average number of hot flushes experienced by postmenopausal women taking 60 g of soy protein isolate daily for 12 weeks.
